TIECTexas International Education Hosts Virtual Professional Development Program for Teachers of English as a Foreign Language with U.S. Department of State Teachers Exchange
[AUSTIN – October 30, 2020] — In collaboration with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs and the U.S. Embassy in Amman, the Texas International Education Consortium (TIEC) developed a series of online, facilitated professional-development courses for teachers of English as a Foreign Language. The program is designed to increase cooperation, collaboration and accountability in delivering English language programs in K-12 schools within the MENA region.
The aim is to enhance and improve techniques and professional skills and encourage the adoption of new best practices for both teachers and administrators. As a result, this program will establish a space for collaboration and co-creation that will lead participants to better understand each other’s perspectives.
This virtual program comes as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic and will facilitate exchanges between TIEC program alumni and U.S. teachers of English as a Foreign Language and English as a Second Language. Participants from TIEC’s 2019 and 2020 Pan Regional Teacher Exchange programs will have access to these courses and are encouraged to collaborate on projects throughout the duration of the program and beyond within TIEC’s online global community. Each live, synchronous professional-development course will last six weeks and feature engaging participation sessions for attendees, as well as guest lecturers and networking opportunities.
“We look forward to connecting with English-language teachers from all over the Middle East and North Africa region. This program will connect participants and give them a platform to discuss their experiences and build up their community and network,” said Dr. Heather Farmakis, Chief Learning Officer at TIEC. “Ultimately, this program will strengthen participants’ skills as EFL teachers while simultaneously providing them with strategies for delivering online learning.”
The program takes place from Oct. 26, 2020, through April 30, 2021, with professional-development courses including Methodology for EFL Teachers, Student-Centered Curriculum for EFL Teachers and Professional Learning Communities.
