TIEC has long been a hub for fostering collaboration, innovation, and global engagement among Texas colleges and universities, and we couldn’t do it without the commitment of the amazing staff and faculty within our consortium. This month, we’re taking a moment to celebrate and express our deepest gratitude to two leaders who have been instrumental in shaping the landscape of international education in Texas — Mr. Jay Horn from The University of Texas at Arlington and Dr. Pia Wood from the University of North Texas.
Both Mr. Horn and Dr. Wood have dedicated their careers to strengthening global partnerships, expanding international opportunities for students and faculty, and ensuring that Texas remains at the forefront of international education. Their leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment have left a lasting impact on TIEC as well as the broader international education community.
Jay Horn’s tenure at The University of Texas at Arlington has been marked by his passion for creating transformative experiences for students. Through his leadership, UTA has expanded its international reach, deepened its collaborations with institutions worldwide, and provided students with invaluable opportunities to engage in global learning. He also played a pivotal role in representing Texas higher education on a global stage by orchestrating UTA’s participation at NAFSA 2023, the world’s largest international education conference. His efforts have not only enhanced the university’s reputation in international education but have also contributed to the broader mission of making international experiences more accessible to all students
Pia Wood has been a formidable force in advancing the University of North Texas's international strategy, ensuring that the university remains a leader in global education. Under her direction, UNT’s International Affairs has seen remarkable growth and success, even in the face of a global pandemic. Her efforts have positioned UNT as a leader in international education, elevating its reputation at the state, national, and international levels. Her dedication to building bridges across cultures has had a profound impact on students, faculty, and international partners alike.
Beyond their contributions at UTA and UNT, Dr. Wood and Mr. Horn have played pivotal roles within our consortium, serving as advocates, mentors, and thought leaders in the international education community. Both have been dedicated members of TIEC's Operating Council, a group of advisors from our member universities that convenes regularly to exchange insights on international programs and explore ways TIEC can enhance their impact. They also served on the inaugural Operating Council Leadership Committee, which has helped expand funding opportunities for Texas institutions of all sizes and regions while advancing strategic internationalization, study abroad program development, and virtual exchange initiatives. Their collaborative spirit, forward-thinking approach, and tireless dedication have helped shape policies and programs that will continue to benefit Texas institutions for years to come.
As they embark on their well-earned retirements, we celebrate their achievements, thank them for their invaluable contributions, and wish them all the best in their next chapters. Their legacies will undoubtedly continue to inspire the next generation of international education leaders in Texas and beyond.
Jay and Pia, from all of us at TIEC, thank you for your unwavering commitment to global education. Your impact will be felt for years to come!
