MODULE 1: ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE & NAVIGATING CHANGE

This module will introduce students to the main skills, theories, and practices of leadership in healthcare organizations, highlighting the overarching principle that healthcare leadership is a long-term, continuous, and intentionally focused effort. It will draw primarily from the fields of organizational theory and behavior to equip associates with management and leadership competencies that enable them to make a positive difference in their work organizations and in the health and healthcare of patients and populations. An emphasis will be placed on enhancing healthcare organizations, staff members’ and healthcare professionals’ development of diverse patient populations and healthcare organizational environments. Topics will include Factors Affecting Organizational Culture and Behavior, Challenges of Delivering Value in Current Healthcare Environments, Human Resource Effectiveness in Health Services Organizations (HSOs), Culturally Appropriate Evidence-Based Healthcare for Diverse Populations, and Use of Strategies to Manage Change and Improve Organizational Performance.

MODULE 2: FOUNDATIONS OF HEALTHCARE QUALITY & SAFETY

This module provides healthcare practitioners and others with an introduction to the knowledge and skills needed to lead patient safety and quality improvement initiatives at the micro and macro levels. Healthcare organizations are held accountable for ensuring that the quality of care and services meets the expectations of patients, healthcare professionals, the public, regulatory, and accrediting bodies, payers, and other stakeholders. Topics will include quality management (including patient safety, risk assessment and prevention, peer review, and patient experience and satisfaction), performance improvement and management concepts, systems, practices, and technologies. Topics reflect the healthcare delivery systems shift to business models designed to reward safe and quality care outcomes as well as cost-effective care.

MODULE 3: STRATEGIC EXECUTION OF HEALTH OPERATIONS

In this module, students will gain an understanding of how to manage the healthcare setting through strategic planning, directing, and leadership responsibilities. It will discuss current challenges facing the healthcare industry today, and how they can be solved with more efficient operations. The module will cover a broad spectrum of operations improvement programs, techniques and tools in the healthcare environment, and help put processes in place that address the complex web of reimbursement systems, physician relations, workforce challenges, and governmental regulations. Topics will include healthcare challenges, operation improvements, effective decision making, hospital staffing management, financial obligations, integration of higher level of patient care based on current standards, and understanding how older models of management and leadership practices can be blended into contemporary practices within today’s healthcare industry.

MODULE 4: FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT FOR HEALTHCARE QUALITY LEADERS

This module is designed to provide students with tools for financial management responsibilities in healthcare. It offers a practical approach for identifying, analyzing, and making recommendations regarding the financial viability of business decisions facing healthcare organizations. Topics will include financial and management accounting, the financial reporting structure of healthcare organizations, healthcare financial statement analysis, budgetary methods, sources of healthcare revenue and expenses, processes for healthcare billing, and capital investment decisions. It will also cover the value of an organization’s assets, along with the key differences between publicly held companies versus privately held entities. Mergers, acquisitions, and other types of joint ventures will also be reviewed.
