SHARING INTERNATIONAL EXPERTISE SINCE 1985

In 1985, The University of Texas at Austin faced an influx of international students whose sponsors required support and monitoring services beyond degree studies. Not equipped to provide those services on its own, the university’s international office reached out to other state supported universities—and the Texas International Education Consortium (TIEC) was born.

The initial results established sponsored student programs across a number of campuses as well was the beginnings of an ongoing dialogue among university administrators regarding international student programs. Presidents of the participating universities became members of the TIEC Board of Directors. Senior International Officers and other representatives became members of the TIEC Operating Council.

EARLY SUCCESSES

A significant early event that firmly established TIEC as a leader in international education was a program in which more than 1,500 Malaysian students completed their university degrees at U.S. universities.

TIEC merged with the Texas Intensive English Program (TIEP), the oldest Intensive English program in the state and another outgrowth of international education programs at the University of Texas—in this case, English-as-a-second-language (ESL) instruction. Since 1965, TIEP has helped more than 30,000 students and professionals, from 131 countries, as they pursued programs in English language, U.S. culture, academic study skills, and pedagogy.

EXPANDING FOCUS

By the early 1990s, TIEC had reached beyond receiving sponsored students and had built a model using Texas faculty and administrators as consulting teams to provide services for international university design and curriculum reform.

This evolution extended the reach of Texas universities to include a new focus on serving education worldwide, providing a global gateway to the expertise of Texas universities, and promoting international peace by sharing knowledge around the world.

A RECOGNIZED LEADER

Today, few American organizations provide the depth and breadth of expertise that can match TIEC capabilities. Located in Austin, Texas, the independent, non-profit corporation TIEC delivers a full range of programs and consulting services to both the global educational community and Texas.
